on Monday. A resident of Kumargram, Sarkar was a central committee member and publicity secretary of the militant outfit.

Then a student of Class XI, Sarkar had joined KLO in 2005 and trained in different countries. He travelled to Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal and Bhutan while working for the outfit. In 2012, he was arrested in Darjeeling, but secured bail. He fled home again to join the group. “We had received information that he was in Assam,” South Dinajpur SP Rahul De said.

After his surrender on Monday, Sarkar said: “I was misled when I was very young and I joined KLO. But now I’ve realised my mistake and have also been inspired by the state government’s rehabilitation project.”

So far, 12 KLO members have surrendered in South Dinajpur and they have been given government jobs.
