MIDNAPORE: A three-year-old boy, Sujal, and his one-year-old sister Preyashi were allegedly kidnapped by their father Babu Das about six months ago and taken to Bangalore following a quarrel with his wife. Police rescued them and handed them over to their mother on Friday, as ordered by Midnapore chief judicial magistrate Narendranath Dasgupta. Dasgupta also asked police to arrest the father and produce him in court, said Ardhendu Saha, assistant public prosecutor.
"Piyali Das complained that her husband and in-laws used to regularly torture and pressure her for dowry. They also neglected her son and daughter. Last November, Babu thrashed Piyali and left Midnapore, kidnapping Sujal and Preyashi," he added.
Sujal and Preyashi seemed happy to return to their mother. "They did not feed us on time. My grandma threatened to send me to a tea stall to work there after some years as they could not feed me. They used filthy languages against my mother and maternal uncle's family. We are happy to have returned home," said Sujal.
Police say Piyali Das, a resident of Taratala, married orchestra singer Babu Das of Mahatabpur town five years ago. The problem began as Babu couldn't give her enough money to run the family.
