Kolkata: Buried under debt and forced to shift out of a cosy home in Kasba to a slum, he decided to open up a fake company, "recruit" some employees and carry out a heist in the same neighbourhood he once lived in.
Hours after a bleeding Ardhendu Dey was arrested from Tagore Park in Kasba for attempting a robbery, which was foiled by the joint effort of a homemaker and her mother-in-law, Priya Choudhury (25) and her mother-in-law Mina (57), the police busted this bizarre tale of robbery.
Two of Dey's "recruits", Soumen Chatterjee (28) and Raj Kamal Ram (28), both residents of Chakradharpur, were also picked up on Tuesday.
During questioning, Dey told the police he lived at Kasba till 2015 when he worked for a private firm, but an extravagant lifestyle soon reduced him to poverty and he had to move to a slum. A heist seeming to be an easy way to make a lot of money at a go, Dey decided to "interview" prospective "recruits". He told them he was interviewing them for a reputable paints firm. "Chatterjee and Ram claimed they had no idea Dey was planning a robbery until they reached the Choudhury home," said an officer, pointing out that "no one carries knives to jobs". A firearm and two knives were recovered from the accused. DC (south suburban) Santosh Pandey said Dey targeted a house from where he expected the least resistance. "But he did not expect the two women to put up such a spirited fight," he added.
