On July 22, Bhattacharya had filed a petition citing newspapers reports on how women in North 24-Parganas' Kamduni feel insecure in the aftermath of the gang rape and murder of a college student. In the petition, she said that women, particularly the younger ones, feel they are at risk because there's no security in sight. She also mentioned the absence of proper transport for girls to go to and return from schools and colleges.
On Monday, Kamduni villagers Tumpa Koyal, Mousumi Koyal, headmaster of a local school Pradip Mukherjee and the victim's brother testified before the full bench of the commission. After hearing their account, the bench asked the additional chief secretary (home) and principal secretary (transport) to appear before it on August 5 to know the steps taken by the government so far.
