Kaliaganj: Have told cops to probe all angles, says Mamata

Kolkata/Malda: CM Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said the death of the 17-year-old girl in Kaliaganj was “very unfortunate” and the administration was with the family. Banerjee said while social media chats that have emerged in the police probe suggested a “love affair” between the accused and the victim, she had asked police to probe all angles and take strong action. “The death was due to poisoning as per the post-mortem, which was videographed. If after any incident we do not take action then blame us, but why blame after the police has taken action,” she said. Section 144 was imposed on four wards of Kaliaganj but the tension remained with locals recounting Tuesday’s horror. Sukhdeb Pal, a senior citizen who lives next to the Kaliaganj police station, said, “I was watching TV when suddenly a few police constables ran in and begged for shelter. They were followed by some irate youths. I ran out of my home in fright. Inside my room, the policemen were severely assaulted by rods and sticks. My room was ransacked and the furniture damaged. My room was ransacked.” Sandhya Das, at whose house two civic volunteers were severely roughed up, had a similar story to tell. North Dinajpur police superintendent Md Sana Akhtar said, “The injured policemen admitted the Raiganj Medical College Hospital have undergone CT scan. They are stable.” Police patrolling has been intensified and political parties have been asked not to hold any programme. On Wednesday, governor CV Ananda Bose spoke to DGP Manoj Malaviya on the actions taken in Kaliaganj. He was also given a report by chief secretary HK Dwivedi.
