kolkata: the jadavpur university conferred an honorary dsc on nobel prize winning scientist ahmed h. zewail of egypt on monday. the forty-sixth annual convocation of the 'five star' university was also held during the day. speaking on the occasion, chancellor of the university governor viren shah congratulated students who had won awards and degrees.
it is a matter of great pride that jadavpur university has come to be recognised among one of the few top ranking universities of the country in terms of academic excellence, shah said. shah emphasised the need for industry-university partnership financial well-being of institutions. he reminded students that education was subsidised. it is, therefore, your duty to return something to society, he said. in his speech, guest-in-chief n.r. madhava menon spoke on setting goals, determining the quality of education and promoting experimentation and creativity. citing the example of the national law school in bangalore where he taught for years before moving to the national university of juridical sciences in kolkata, menon said, jadavpur is not just another university which continues with conventional teaching and examination system, contributing to the problem of unemployment and under-employment.
