KOLKATA: There was high drama at the Calcutta High Court on Friday when a "rape" victim — a minor girl of 16 — coming out of court No. 6, burst into tears before additional public prosecutor Asimesh Goswami.
"What will happen to me, Sir? Please do something for me!" she pleaded. She had come out from the courtroom after Sanjib Sarkar of Haldibari in Cooch Behar, who had cohabited with her for a year and was now in custody, informed the court that he was not ready to marry her.
Goswami tried to pacify her, saying, "Dont worry, you have passed Madhyamik, your father must do something for you.
He will arrange for your marriage." "Im a rape victim, it is known to everybody in my village. Ultimately I will have to commit suicide, because the society will not accept me," the girl sobbed.
The drama followed after Sanjibs bail prayer was rejected by a division bench of Justice N.A. Chowdhury and Justice Arunabha Barua.
Sarkar was the girls private tutor. He had convinced her to have sexual intercourse with the promise of marriage a number of times. After a year, he suddenly broke off the relationship. The girl then filed an FIR and the police started a rape case and arrested Sarkar.
During the hearing, the bench wanted to know whether he was ready to marry the girl. Opposing the bail, Goswami said that the marriage was not possible as the girl was minor.
