Back to the villages. This is themission of the three toppers on this year''s successful candidates in the JointEntrance Examination medical list.
All three have one more thing incommon — their alma mater. They are all students of Burdwan ChristianMissionaries Societies School (CMS), and wish to go to villages after completingtheir MBBS degree.
Abhijan Maity of Bhatchala in Burdwan has stoodsecond, Kallol Chattopadhyay of Shyamlal area has stood fifth and Saptorsi Bisnuof Khoshbagan area in Burdwan town came eighth on the list.
It ispossible that their roots have worked towards deciding their location of work. All three are from middle class and lower middle class families, thus making theboys more sensitive towards the problems of society.
Abhijan''s fatherKalipada Maity is an X-Ray technician at the Memari Hospital. “It was mymother’s dream that I become a doctor and treat poor people living in thevillages, he said. Despite having ranked high in the engineering sectionalso, he chose the more difficult path of treating the poorvillagers.
Kallol, son of Debiprasad Chattopadhyay, a sub-assistantengineer, though, has higher ambitions. He wants to go abroad for specialisationafter completing the MBBS course, but after that, plans to return to thevillages.
Saptorsi, whose father is a Reserve Bank employee, says thathis first target is to repeat the feat once again in the MBBS examination.“I love villages and will come back here to treat the poor people,he said. The feat of the trio is another feather in the cap of Burdwan, theagricultural capital of the state, after local boy Soumajit Dey topped theMadhyamik Examination this year.
While this is not the first timethat students from the CMS School have been selected in the JEE, thistrio’s high ranking has brought celebration time to the 170 year-oldinstitution. “Every week, the school has a parent-teacher meeting todiscuss the problems of the students. The school even delayed the HigherSecondary practical tests for few days so that students get sufficient time forpreparation, said an official.
“We want to make ourstudents complete human beings instead of being mere toppers in theexaminations. That is why all the three boys want to work in thevillages, headmaster Biswanath Chakraborty said.
