Iskcon says 'Lord Jagannath saved Donald Trump', recalls 1976 New York Rathyatra help

KOLKATA: As the frontrunner in the US presidential race was hit in the ear in an apparent assassination attempt by a gunman at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, Iskcon recalled Sunday Donald Trump's association with the first Rathyatra in New York nearly half-a-century ago.

Iskcon Kolkata vice-president Radharamn Das called Trump's narrow escape divine intervention. "In July 1976, Donald Trump had come to the rescue of Iskcon devotees looking for a large space to construct the raths by providing his train yard for free. Today, during the Rathyatra festival, it was Lord Jagannath's turn to return the favour," Das said.

Assistance from the then 30-year-old emerging real-estate mogul had made the first chariot procession of Lord Jagannath on New York's Fifth Avenue possible in 1976.

Finding a huge empty site close to Fifth Avenue in New York where the chariots could be built was never going to be easy.

Devotees of Iskcon who were planning a big bang 10th celebration of the organisation with a grand Rathyatra in New York had knocked on the doors of every person possible, but in vain.

A few days later, the Iskcon devotees learnt that Donald Trump had purchased the old railway yard. Devotees then went to his office with a big basket of Maha Prasadam and a presentation package.

His secretary took it but warned: "He never agrees to this kind of thing. You can ask but he is going to say 'no'."

Three days later, Trump's secretary called up the devotees saying: "I don't know what happened but he read your letter, took a bit of the food you left, and immediately said, 'Sure, why not?'"

This is an incredible detail that cannot be overlooked. We thank the author Subhro Niyogi for a piece well written and in deep respect for Lord Jagannatha's mercy.Donald Trump showed kindness to Lord Jagannatha's festival, even though he may have done so whimsically or in ignorance (Sure, why not?), the result was ajnata sukriti (unknown pious credit). Now that credit has come to pass, as the Lord reciprocated by saving his life. Is this coincidence? No! Not even a blade of grass moves without the Lord's sanction. Even bad reactions may be sanctioned when bad karma is due to pass. But this incident speaks of something far superior to and beyond good karma because former president Trump served Lord Jagannatha, the Lord of the universe, and by serving him, we do not merely get karma, we get special mercy. But this is why some of the people in the Indian media should stop calling the deities "idols", or referring to our Vedic pastimes as "Hindu mythology". We need to stand up against this behaviour. Recently there was some article my wife told me about where Lord Balarama fell forward on his chariot during the Rathayatra festival in which some people were injured, but the news reporter referred to Lord Balarama as an idol. This insult of the Lord should be a punishable offence by a very stiff penalty! The Lord is not an idol (image of a false God representing materialistic ideals). Lord Balarama, Jagannatha and Subhadra are aspects of supreme divinity, with Jagannatha being the supreme personality of Godhead Krishna himself, Lord Balarama being the Lord's own very first expansion, and Subhadra being an expansion of durga, the Lord's external energy. This is well known to all those reporting in the Indian media, so that a plea of ignorance should only be accepted following a public appology and a demotion in one's rank in the media.Forgive my digression. This article demonstrating Lord Jagannatha's reciprocation with Donald Trump is certainly a great story. Not story, a fact.
