At least three members of the family were trapped in the ground floor while the fire ravaged the floors above.
“I was not present when the incident happened. My brother had also gone out to work. I panicked when we heard the news and rushed back,“ said Ajay Kumar Sahu, one of the residents. “My parents are old and cannot move with ease. I was worried about them. I thank god that no one was hurt.“
Neighbours alerted the fire department after escorting the elderly couple and another woman out. An adjacent building was affected, but only minimally .
When asked why they were hoarding inflammable products in a residential area, Sahu said they had been allowed to do so, but failed to provide any document supporting the claim. Police said they will investigate the case minutely as loopholes were found in the primary statements. “We have been apprehending an accident like this for a long time now. A storehouse like this should not be allowed in a congested residential area like ours,“ said a local.
