High court grants permission to PIL on JU

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Monday granted permission to an advocate to file a public interest litigation (PIL) on the recent incident of ragging at Jadavpur University that took the life of a fresher.
Advocate Sayan Banerjee who sought the court’s permission to file the petition in person has urged setting up of a committee under the supervision of a retired judge to implement the recommendations of the Raghavan Committee that was set up on the directions of the Supreme Court following a ragging incident in Kerala in 2007.
The R R Raghavan Committee cited the observations of the Kerala High Court division bench that held: “What was intended to be in good faith and provide untainted fun is now characterized as physical torture with a sadistic tendency and sexual perversions. There are few reported cases of loss of life also.”
