Kolkata: A ride without helmet claimed yet another biker's life as he died in an accident on Sunday near Garden Reach. He suffered a severe head injury and was declared dead after the police took him to hospital.
Sourajit Haldar (25) was going to his office at Taratala around 9.45 am on his bike. After reaching the rail gate at Taratala, he saw a truck carrying fly ash charging in from behind.
As he tried to speed up and move his bike to the right side, the truck went past him, pushing his bike to the ground. The two-wheeler skidded to the side and Haldar fell on his head. The truck then crushed his body as it kept on speeding. A police patrol rushed to the spot and he was taken to SSKM Hospital, where he was declared dead. According to sources, Haldar, a resident of Mudiali, had been taking the same route every day to reach his office.
A technician with a motor company at Taratala, Haldar started a little late on Sunday morning. As he was in a hurry, he sped his bike near the rail gate. The truck was stopped by the cops but the driver fled the spot.
In a separate incident, a pedestrian, Tapan Saha, was killed after being hit by a speeding bus on Sunday morning. Saha (45) was trying to cross the road near Gouri Bari in north Kolkata when a bus, plying on the DN-18 route, rammed into him. According to locals, there was a traffic congestion on near Gauri Bari area at the time. Seeing the traffic coming to a halt owing to the congestion, Saha tried to cross the road. But the bus had started speeding by then. Saha was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead. Police has seized the bus and arrested the driver.
