KOLKATA: A civic volunteer, attached to the Sealdah Traffic Guard, was reportedly assaulted by a biker, and his friends, in the Palmer Bazar area when he and a sergeant stopped the accused for not wearing a helmet. During a check, the biker could not produce papers for the newly bought two-wheeler either, said the civic volunteer, Saroyar Molla (33). The incident on Monday that took place during the ongoing campaign against helmetless riders became the third attack on traffic personnel during the drive this month. The traffic sergeant was the first to flag the biker down for not wearing a helmet. When the rider failed to produce vehicle registration and insurance documents, the sergeant instructed Molla to seize the two-wheeler. Even as the rider protested, he waited until the seizure formalities were underway to call his friends to the spot. Soon, a group of youths arrived and attacked Molla. Despite the physical assault, the traffic team managed to retain the bike though the accused fled.Molla, who sustained injuries, was taken to NRS Medical College, where he was treated and subsequently discharged. An FIR was registered at the Entally PS and a manhunt was launched for the accused. .
