Health panel orders 2 pvt hosps to pay 3L

Kolkata: The West Bengal Clinical Regulatory Establishment Commission has asked two private hospitals to pay a compensation of Rs 3 lakh to a woman who had to undergo an abortion due to a delay in conducting a TVS (transvaginal ultrasound).According to her complaint, the woman, a nurse, first went to Bhagirathi Neotia Hospital with profuse vaginal bleeding. Even as the emergency doctors advised TVS, the hospital said the radiologist would take at least 45 minutes to reach the hospital. Unwilling to wait, her husband called up CMRI and upon ensuring the test, they reached the second hospital. But here too, a USG was only done after the patient was examined by a gynaecologist, but not the TVS even after three hours, forcing them to go to Woodlands. While the procedure was done at Woodlands, due to the delay the foetus had to be aborted."We have ordered Bhagirathi Neotia Hospital to pay a compensation of Rs 1 lakh and CMRI a compensation Rs 2 lakh to the patient," said Justice (retd) Asim Kumar Banerjee, chairman, WBCREC.
