The Calcutta high court on Thursday asked YouTube not to publish "personal, defamatory and derogatory comments" against Hasin Jahan, the estranged wife of cricketer Md Shami, and directed it to delete such content already published. It asked Jahan to "communicate the particulars of the posts and material which she finds to be defamatory" to police so that they could ask YouTube to remove them.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha observed that it would be "futile" to proceed against such trolls, given their large numbers.

Jahan had moved the HC in 2019 saying she and her minor daughter had been subjected to trolling, threat and intimidation on YouTube and Facebook due to her ongoing legal battle with Shami. Police said they had written to Facebook and YouTube to remove the offensive posts. "Police said while Facebook had complied, the posts on YouTube remained," her lawyer said.
