Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Wednesday stayed the termination of Kazi Nazrul Islam University registrar Chandan Konar by vice-chancellor Sadhan Chakraborty for three weeks. Justice Biswajit Basu referred the matter to a regular bench for further hearing.
Konar’s counsel Joydeep Kar said, “The manner in which the discharge letter was served to Konar was not legal.”
Konar received the appointment letter to join on probation as the registrar on January 30.
He joined the university on February 1 and was discharged from his duties on March 14.
Kar submitted to the court that Konar was appointed following a decision of the executive council, which is the university’s highest policy-making body, and the VC had no jurisdiction to discharge him.
University counsel Arunangshu Chakraborty said that the VC was well within his limits to issue the discharge letter.
