Calcutta High Court

on Tuesday came down heavily on the CBI as the central agency failed to complete the probe in chit fund cases after it was asked by the Supreme Court on May 9, 2014. The SC order, however, has no mention of a deadline for completing the probe.


The division bench of Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Shekar B Saraf, while hearing the petition of the duped investors of MPS group, asked additional solicitor general Kaushik Chanda who represented CBI, “How long will the probe continue? Four years passed after the apex court’s order, but till now no final report was filed by the CBI about the role of the conspirators. So, how long the arrested accused persons will remain in custody. This delay is hampering the trial of the cases,” Bagchi said. The state government’s counsel told the court that assets worth Rs 830 crore had been identified. Arindam Das, appearing for the depositors, pleaded that many MPS officials, who are yet to be arrested, were hindering the auction of the assets. The case will come up will for hearing again on December 13.

Earlier, the HC set up the

Justice SP Talukdar Committee

to facilitate refunds for the duped investors, but the auctions could not fetch enough bidders.
