KOLKATA: Describing his son as a chartered accountant he got him married to a girl but failed to continue the charade till the end. The Calcutta High Court on Monday cancelled a bail granted to Samarendranath Bhattacharjee by a trial court.
Bhattacharjee, a resident of Tangra, had advertised in a daily newspaper seeking a ‘beautiful graduate girl’ for his son Debabrata, who was described as a ‘chartered accountant’.
Attracted by the advertisement, Rabindra Narayan Chakraborty of Tangra Road negotiated with Bhattacharjee for his daughter Sudeshna and finalised her marriage with Bhattacharjee’s son Debabrata.
Debabrata and Sudeshna got married on August 20, 2000 in which Chakraborty, the father of the bride, spent more than Rs 2 lakh for dowry and other expenses. After the marriage Sudeshna however, found out that her husband Debabrata was a mere graduate and unemployed. Upset, she brought matters to the notice of her parents and other relatives. As a result, she was subjected to both physical and mental torture by her in-laws.
lodged by Sudeshna’s father, the Tangra police arrested Bhattacharjee on August 27, 2002. However, he was released on bail by the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate the same day. Praying cancellation of bail Sudeshna moved an application before the high court.
On Monday her application was granted by a division bench comprising justice Amit Talukdar and justice P.N. Sinha.
Appearing on behalf of the state government, public prosecutor Kaji Safiullah argued that the accused was charged under section 467 IPC for placing false documents and the section might prescribe upto life imprisonment. The magistrate had no jurisdiction to grant bail under that section.
It was not an ordinary case of cheating, it was a case of spoiling life of a young girl. It was a most heinous social crime.
