Hasin Jahan demands BCCI action

KOLKATA: Hasin Jahan, the wife of India pacer Mohammed Shami, will write to the BCCI, wanting to know why they are not initiating any action against Shami after the Kolkata Police blamed him of domestic violence in a charge sheet on Thursday. Earlier this year, they had suspended India cricketers Hardik Pandya and Lokesh Rahul for controversial and sexist comments in a popular chat show.

“Kolkata Police has named Shami in the charge sheet. If two of his colleagues could face action because of sexist remarks, then Shami should also face a punishment since the police have also acknowledged he was abusive and torturous to me. Hence, I would write to BCCI, seeking an explanation,” said Jahan on Friday.

Jahan’s lawyer Anirban Guha Thakurta said: “We will draft a letter for Jahan. This is a major issue on women’s justice. There cannot be two different stances for different persons. We are also thinking of appealing to higher court to know why the cops had omitted the names of three of Shami’s relatives in the charge sheet.”

Shami’s lawyer Salim Rahaman, however, said the complaint and letter to BCCI makes no sense. “A charge sheet doesn’t mean a person has been proven guilty. We have seen that in most cases of domestic violence, the charges are hard to prove in the court or get dropped in the long run. Hence, neither BCCI nor any agency can start taking action against its employees acting on all such complaints,” said Rahaman.
