KOLKATA: Bidhannagar Police has unearthed a large network of seven illegal call centres - all run by the same person - through a string of arrests made over the last four days. The cops have found an illegal firearm and six bullets from the kingpin.
On Friday, cops first barged into a New Town flat to find four men operating a call centre from there.
They got information from there about another call centre operating out of a bungalow in Salt Lake. That was sealed as well on Saturday.
Interrogating the men, cops came across five more fake call centres in Salt Lake at Midland Park in Sector V, CL 257 and Block BH 127 in Salt Lake. A PG was also raided in BG 49 where multiple computers were seized as well. "This place allegedly harboured the illegal callers," said the officer.
TOI on Monday had reported that alarmed by back-to-back raids at fake call centre offices in New Town, Salt Lake and Rajarhat, fraudsters seem to have changed their modus operandi and are now operating out of rented flats.
Furthermore, based on the interrogations, the kingpins of this network, Shashi Gaurav Soni and his brother Saurabh Soni, were arrested from Liluah, Howrah. Multiple documents, deeds, phones, laptops were seized from them.
"Two luxury cars and one kg of gold was also seized. One illegal firearm and six rounds were found on Shashi Gaurav Soni. Multiple bank accounts have been frozen, and raids are on to round up more people associated with this network," said a Bidhannagar Police officer.
A senior officer of Bidhannagar Police said, the whole network could be cracked with the alacrity of SI Abdul Hamid Molla, duly assisted by SI Saikat Bhattacharjee of New Town PS. On Monday, Bidhannagar CP Gaurav Sharma in a special programme, rewarded them with an appreciation letter and monetary reward.
