KOLKATA: The Coast Guard, on Saturday, briefed Bengal governor Keshari Nath Tripathi on the need to have life-saving equipment on fishing vessels as well as ferries crossing from the mainland to Sagar Island with passengers. The governor was also briefed on the role of the Coast Guard in saving lives at sea and securing the maritime borders of coastal states like West Bengal.
"On Saturday, the Governor visited the Coast Guard District Headquarter – 8 at Haldia and Sagar Island on. On arrival at Haldia, he was received by VSR Murthy, inspector general, Coast Guard Region (NE), the district commander of Haldia CG station, the district superintendent of police and the district magistrate of East Midnapore. He was then briefed by the IG on various roles and responsibilities of the Coast Guard and efforts towards coastal security in West Bengal. The IG also highlighted the necessity of carrying required lifesaving equipment on board fishing vessels and ferries operating up to Sagar Island which will be useful in saving precious lives in case of distress or natural calamity," a senior Coast Guard officer said.
The Governor also embarked by Hovercraft H-188 and proceeded on a recce to Sagar Island to get a first-hand account of Hovercraft Operations. On completion of the recce, the Governor interacted with officers and families.
