KOLKATA: A 15-year-old girl had to be hospitalised with head injuries after the English teacher of her Shyamnagar school caned her when she failed to recite a poem. The teacher, Bimal Biswas, has been arrested. Biswas caned other girls on Wednesday afternoon before picking on Kavita Das, the Class IX student of Tara Brahmamoyee Vidya Mandir in Sharad Pally.
He first asked Sapna Biswas to recite the poem. As she faltered, the teacher lashed out with his cane. He moved on to Sudipta Kundu. She, too, made a mistake and faced the same punishment. It was Kavita’s turn next. When she faltered as well, a furious Biswas started caning her brutally. Writhing in agony, Kavita pleaded with him, saying that she had hurt her head the day before. But Biswas brought the cane down on her head, drawing blood.
The girl collapsed and fell unconscious. Sensing trouble, Biswas slipped out of the class. The terrorised students then raised an alarm. Kavita was rushed to Bhatpara State General Hospital and later shifted to Kalyani Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Hospital. On Thursday morning, angry guardians went to the school with their wards and protested against the teacher’s barbaric behaviour. Some even tried enter the building forcibly, but were stopped by a Jagaddal police team. Sajal Bhattacharya, school committee secretary, condemned the teacher’s action. “We will take action against him and bear Kavita’s cost of treatment,” he said.
