KOLKATA: A north Kolkata puja will have a senior ‘nude model’ as its theme this year. Sixty-four-year-old Fulkumari Das, who has been a live nude model for art college students for over four decades will be the subject of the Jagat Mukherjee Park pandal, which aims to pay a tribute to her fraternity through her.
Popular in the artist community as ‘Fuldi’, she has modelled for stalwarts like Bikash Bhattacharya, Ganesh Haloi, Jogen Chowdhury and Chintamani Kar. The theme of the puja will be unveiled by Fulkumari herself at a function to be held at Jagat Mukherjee Park. The inaugural event will be attended by celebrated artists Subrato Gangopadhyay and Bimal Kundu.
“The nude models have a significant role in every artist’s making but struggle to make ends meet. Fuldi is like my elder sister. At college, we used to grab potato rolls from her tiffin box,” said artist, Sanatan Dinda. The interiors of the pandal will be designed like an artist’s studio. The decorations and ambience of the mandap where the idol will be placed will lead them to a world, which remains out of the reach of common people.
Dwaipayan Roy, joint secretary of the puja committee said, “The focus on Fulkumari will help people know more about art college models and diminish their misconceptions about them.”
Fulkumari who still works as a model in Government Art College in Kolkata, Academy of Fine Arts and at some private studios said, “I started my job when I was 16. I have had a golden experience of working with great artists. I feel honoured as this puja committee has invited me.”
