KOLKATA: A dream for a holiday abroad turned bitter for Amitabha Mukherjee’s family and several others who were duped of their money by a fraud travel company.
The Mukherjee family did start on their journey to Nepal, only to be dumped at the border. On October 11, Mukherjee had opted for a package tour to Nepal after paying Rs 75,000.
According to his complaint with the Burrabazar police, Mukherjee had made a deal with one Ghosh Special agency at 34, Strand Road.
The family started on a train journey, accompanied by “tour manager Ajit Das.
They were taken to Birgunj, just off the Indo-Nepal border. Here, Das simply vanished , leaving the family completely stranded. The Mukherjee family had little option but to buy return tickets to Kolkata.
On arriving in the city the next day, an angry Mukherjee went straight to the agency demanding an explanation from the agents. Much to his horror, the office was locked and barred. He then rushed to lodge a complaint with the cops.
DC (DD-I) Soumen Mitra said two brothers Manik and Kalyan Ghosh owned the agency.
“Kalyan has been arrested, but Manik has given the slip, Mitra said. The police are trying to track down all those responsible for the travel fraud.
