HOWRAH

: Four persons were arrested in connection with the murder of a

fish vendor

on Howrah’s Bankim Setu on June 21 morning.

Around 4.30am on June 21, Tarak Bhuniya, a fish

vendor

was going to the wholesale fish market when he was shot from point blank range. The miscreants had also looted some cash from him and escaped from the spot.

Probing into the matter, the Howrah police found connection of Golab Khan (31), an extortionist who was reportedly threatening Bhuniya for money for sometime. The police had almost caught Khan on Friday but he managed to escape after firing two rounds at the cops.

Early on Sunday, the cops got tip off that Khan along with three other miscreants, Jitendra Mahato, Dipak Das and Gajanand Mullick who were involved in the murder were hiding at a house at Nischinda area. The police conducted a raid and nabbed the four accused. The cops also recovered a semi-automatic pistol, a one-shotter, some live cartridge and a knife from them.

Prima facie, it appeared Bhuniya was killed as he was not giving in to the extortion demands. Police would further interrogate the arrested to know more on the matter.
