KOLKATA: Former advocate general Naranarayan Gooptu passed away at his Salt Lake residence on Monday morning. Gooptu was 90 and is survived by his two daughters and son.
A barrister from Lincoln's Inn, London, Gooptu joined the Calcutta High Court in 1960, and grew in association and under the guidance of Snehangshu Kanta Acharya, Sadhan Gupta, Hasim Abdul Halim, Arun Prakash Chatterjee and Ajit Panja. Gooptu rose to prominence while fighting against detention without trial of government employees.
Gooptu was close to former Bengal CM Jyoti Basu. He served as advocate general of Bengal from 1987 to 2001. Gooptu was also the former chairman of the Bar Council of West Bengal. He penned a few books, among which, "Reflections on Law and Society" got acclaim. Gooptu was also a good speaker and a Rabindrasangeet singer.
Advocate general S N Mookherjee recalled his long association with Gooptu. "I knew him since childhood. He was very generous and a kind-hearted personality."
Calcutta High Court Bar Association president Arunava Ghosh said, "Gooptu stood as a pillar in defence of the state government during his tenure as advocate general."
Paritosh Sinha, secretary of Incorporated Law Society, Calcutta, called Gooptu the doyen of Calcutta Bar. "He was respected by the bench and the bar. He was the advocate general when I joined the profession," he said.
Bar Library Club, Calcutta High Court, secretary Pramit Ray called Gooptu a great lawyer. "He was a good friend of my father's. He was well-behaved and a great lawyer," Ray said.
