Focus on puja crowd mgmt

Kolkata: In a bid to avoid congestion during Durga Puja, the Kolkata Traffic Police will focus on crowd monitoring using more volunteers and technology with focus on MG Road-CR Avenue Crossing, Chetla Crossing, Rashbehari Crossing, Deshapriya Park Crossing and Sovabazar Crossing. Cops want both sides barricaded at Amherst Street and BB Ganguly Street. Dispersal of crowds from College Square will also be done via Bankim Chatterjee Street. Route to Tridhara will also be tweaked. tnn

Cross-country race on Oct 2

The Sports department in Kanpur will be organizing a 5 km cross-country race for men and women on Gandhi Jayanti. Entry is free and prizes will be awarded to the top six runners in each group. Interested participants can submit their entries on October 2 at the regional sports office. The race will start at 7am.

Jayakwadi storage up, crosses 40%

The live storage of the Jayakwadi major irrigation project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, India, has crossed the 40% mark with a steady inflow of 10,000 cusec. The dam has witnessed gradual revival over the past week due to revived monsoon conditions. Widespread rainfall was observed in Marathwada, which is expected to boost the storage level in other dams. The region has reported a 16% rainfall deficiency since June 1. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued heavy rainfall warnings for Kerala, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, south Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra. The Krishnagiri Reservoir Project dam in Krishnagiri has reached its maximum storage level, prompting a flood alert.

Residents picket railway crossing at Surya Nagar

Residents in Coimbatore staged a protest demanding the construction of a flyover that had been sanctioned 12 years ago but not yet built. The protesters also expressed their dissatisfaction with the closure of Ramachandra Road. Police were present to ensure the demonstration remained peaceful and talks were held between the police and protesters. In Madurai, temporary traffic changes have been implemented due to ongoing flyover construction, affecting vehicles traveling from Mudakkusalai junction to HMS Colony. Farmers in Chamarajanagar are requesting the area be declared drought-hit after the failure of the monsoon and its impact on crops.
