FIR in Kidderpore market fire
Kolkata: Two days after a massive fire broke out at the Orphanganj Market in Kidderpore during the early hours of June 16, affecting 700 shops and causing extensive damage to numerous shops and materials, Watgunge PS has registered an FIR. It was drawn up under Sections 11C and 12 of the West Bengal Fire Services Act, 1950, based on the complaint of Subhankar Ghosh, the station officer of Headquarter Fire Station on Free School Street. While Section 11C deals with the owner or occupier of a high-risk building failing to provide fire prevention and fire safety measures, Section 12 deals with the bar to the use of premises for storing or processing hazardous substances without a licence. The FIR does not name anyone in particular."Preliminary probe by the West Bengal Fire & Emergency Services revealed serious safety violations at the market complex. The marketplace was operating without adequate fire safety measures and firefighting equipment. Additionally, large quantities of inflammable materials were being stored on the premises, exceeding prescribed safety limits," the complaint by the fire dept stated.The blaze, which started around 2.05 am, required a massive emergency response, with CM Mamata Banerjee personally visiting the spot and announcing the rebuilding of the market by the KMC along with compensation.
