Kolkata: Bidhannagar mayor Sabyasachi Dutta and police commissioner Gyanwant Singh on Thursday received a complaint against Rajarhat Trinamool councillor Shahnawaz Ali aka Dampi Mandal.
The complainant, businessman Anup Prasad Sharma, alleges that when he wanted to enter his newly bought Bablatala house, Dampi demanded Rs 10 lakh. When he refused to pay, Dampi's men allegedly slapped him. This happened a few months ago but Sharma mustered courage to complain now, when the CM has ordered a crackdown on extortion syndicates.
Dampi said he does not know anyone by that name. "It is a plot against me and I am being victimised. I have never demanded money from him," he said
Police are taking extortion complains so seriously that Baguiati cops took action on a call about threat to a housing project near Chinar Park on Wednesday. They started a probe before getting a complaint. Once they did, they nabbed Rafiqul Gazi and Ismail Gazi, allegedly close to a councillor.
