THAKURNAGAR: Shantanu Thakur, youngest son of former Trinamool minister and Matua Sangha sabhadhipati Manjul Krishna Thakur, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting policemen who were trying to nab suspects in a theft case at a Mathua temple at Gaighata, North 24 Parganas on March 19. Shantanu’s aide Tapan Kiran Majumdar was also rounded up.

“Suspect, Amit Mahanta, was arrested after being spotted in a CCTV image. Two more were identified,” police said. On Friday, when cops arrested the two at Thakurnagar, some locals allegedly attacked them and snatched the two from cop custody. They held some cops hostage. Thakur and Majumdar were arrested for allegedly attacking cops. But Manjul Thakur alleged, “It was a plot by a relative.”
