The spot where the miscreants attacked, was a few yards away from a police picket.
Soon after the incident, two constables were suspended for dereliction of duty. Later in the day, additional superintendent of police Rahul Srivastava conducted a raid and rounded up two persons suspected to be connected with the incident.
The police said soon after the family boarded a rickshaw, four armed people blocked their way. They tried to snatch the five-year-old child from the clutch of Pampi. At this, an enraged Aksay put up a strong resistance.
He fought strongly with the assilants, which put them on the defensive. On their retreat, the criminals hurled bombs at the family. Pampi received minor injuries, but Akshay sustained serious injuries and was removed to Bansal Nursing Centre.
Superintendent of Howrah district Rajesh Kumar said that they had taken the matter quite seriously. Raids were on to nab the criminals. The police was also investigating whether the attempt by the miscreants was vindictive in nature, he added.
