Drunken youths molest women on bus, one held

Shibpur: Three women in their early twenties were allegedly molested inside a bus in Shibpur in Howrah by two drunken youths on Wednesday evening.
One of the youths was handed over to police by co-passengers while the other managed to flee.
The women, all employed in the same private firm in Andul, had boarded the bus on Route 61 around 4pm to return home after work.While two of them live in Shibpur's Ramkrishnapur locality, the third lives in Liluah.
The youths, later identified as Alam Ali (27) and Sultan Ahmed (28), boarded the bus from Kazipara, said witnesses. Upon boarding, they tried to sit on a largely vacant ladies' seat, which was only occupied by the three women. These women asked the youths to take the general seat instead. But the youths insisted that they would only sit with them. The women objected to this statement.
The youths then started passing lewd comments at the women. One of the women made a very strong protest at the behaviour and called the conductor. The youths then caught the woman by the hand and pulled her up from her seat. With the bus speeding, she lost balance and fell on the floor. She also sustained injuries on her limbs. The youths then caught the other two women by their hands and tried to lift them off their seats but fellow passengers intervened. They caught hold of Ali. Sensing trouble amid loud protests by passengers, Sultan managed to get off the bus as it slowed at a stop and fled.
The bus reached Shibpur from Kazipara. With Ali in their custody, the passengers asked the driver to stop by at Shibpur police station, which was en route. At the police station, the passengers handed Ali over to the cops. The three women who were targets of Ali and Sultan's misdemeanour too got off the bus at the police station and lodged a complaint of molestation. The woman who had sustained injuries was taken to a local hospital, where she was administered first aid.
During interrogation, Ali revealed that he and Sultan were both residents of GCRT Ghat Road in Shibpur. He also told police that he was a carpenter while Sultan worked in a factory. Nishat Pervez, DC headquarters of Howrah City Police, said a molestation case had been started and Ali charged under Section 354 IPC.
