HOWRAH: A young couple was allegedly harassed by a group of drunken men on a train at Digha station when they were on their way to Howrah. The husband, who tried to protect her, was beaten up.
Sayak Bhushan Mukherjee, 32, and wife Paromita, 27, had gone to Digha on a vacation. They were returning home on Monday morning when they became the target of a group of rowdies.
Paromita said that trouble started when she boarded the Tamralipta Express at Digha and kept a handkerchief on a seat to reserve' it. A group came and asked her to remove the handkerchief. "There were about seven of them, all reeking of alcohol. They misbehaved with me and used filthy language," said Paromita. Sayak runs a printing business and the couple lives in Serampore, Hooghly.
One of the youths slapped Paromita. When Sayak protested, he was punched. Paromita said the GRP men at the station didn't act on their complaint. When a ticket collector saw Sayak bleeding, he took him to the pantry car for medication.
On arriving at Howrah, Paromita lodged a complaint with the GRP. "Since the incident did not take place in our jurisdiction, we have referred it to Digha GRP," said Ranbindranath Mukherjee, who was relieved of the post of SRP Howrah on Monday to assume charge as Howrah SP. No one has been arrested yet.
