KOLKATA: The detective department and Posta police claimed to have found leads in the murder of a security guard, Ranjit Biswas (47), at a Posta building three weeks ago.
The leads were given by none other than police sniffer dog Penny. - which ran over a kilometre towards the Howrah station after the dog was pressed in to the investigations. The dog also helped police identify the place, a lodge in Howrah, where the three accused hid after coming all the way from Bihar.
Sources said a Kolkata Police team is already in Bihar where they have detained at least two persons.
Police said the accused carried out a recce of the office on the building's sixth floor. "The accused had information that Rs 30 lakh was kept inside a vault there. On December 18, when they came to loot the vault, Ranjit resisted them. It was then that they murdered him even as all efforts to break the vault failed," said police.
"It seems that the accused had even drilled a hole to try and enter the office Manpuria Agro Products located on the fifth floor. They also tried to open the main door that was locked. This was noticed by Biswas who probably tried to stop them. The goons couldn't execute the robbery finally," said a police source. Police believe Biswas died of asphyxiation after he was throttled.
At least six robberies or attempts to robbery have been reported in the city this year.Locals and traders say that a lot has to do with lax police presence, especially at night.
Meanwhile, the body of a 19-year-old unidentified man was recovered on Monday morning from Kashi Bose lane. The body carried on injury marks except a cut on one of his legs. the postmortem has revealed that this injury was not the reason behind the death. The police is still ascertaining if it was a case of homicide.
