Disciplinary action against Birupaksha Biswas

Kolkata: The state health dept has taken disciplinary action against Birupaksha Biswas by terminating his senior residency. Biswas has been barred from state government employment. Biswas, who was into his first year senior residency (pathology) in Burdwan Medical College, has been asked to deposit a fine of Rs 20 lakh for the remaining two years of senior residency.

This action comes only a week after the health dept’s order of initiating departmenta; proceedings against Avik De. Names of these two junior doctors had cropped up several times during the RG Kar protest with fellow junior doctors calling them as masterminds of threat culture in medical college campuses.

“There is no more space for threat culture and syndicate Raj in Bengal,” said BJP MLA and oncologist Indranil Khan.

Biswas was kept under suspension pending departmental enquiry during the RG Kar movement. Despite the enquiry committee submitting its findings months ago, the action came only on Friday.
