ASANSOL: Uday Shankar Chanda (55), executive director of Dhanbad's biggest hotel - Skylark - has gone missing from Asansol along with his driver and vehicle since Saturday afternoon. Chanda's family fears he has been abducted, but no ransom call has been received so far. A missing diary has been lodged by the hotel management at Bank More police station in Dhanbad.
The high-profile executive was on his way home to Thakurpukur in Kolkata, a trip that he undertakes every 15 days, through National Highway 2.
He spoke to one of the general managers of the hotel over phone at 1.06pm when he was crossing the bypass in Kulti. Since then, hotel employees and his family lost contact with Chanda. His three cellphones and one belonged to his driver Dilip Kumar Singh have remained switched off since 5pm on Saturday.
Rahul Kumar, son of the executive, on Sunday arrived at Kulti police station to lodge an FIR. Rahul said his father's last mobile tower location has been in Kulti. The family has alleged non-cooperation from Burdwan police. The police officials, on the other hand, told reporters they had not received any information about this incident till Sunday afternoon. Burdwan SP Humayun Kabir rushed to Kulti Police Station to take stock of the situation. "Asansol Police will help Dhanbad Police in investigating the case," he said.
The incident has raised a big question mark on the law and order situation in Asansol. Not even a month back, three persons were killed in broad daylight in Kachari Road. Police are still groping in the dark to crack the case. Despite repeated appeals by various chambers of commerce in the region, a check post has not been set up at the busy and porous Asansol-Dhanbad border.
Rajendra Prasad Khaitan, secretary of the Federation of South Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has urged chief minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene and restore faith among the investors. "We want a separate police commissionerate for Asansol-Durgapur to stop this kind of crime," he added.
Skylark Hotel is a three star category Hotel in Dhanbad and is a unit of the Johal Group.
