KOLKATA: A 22-year-old dental college student from Haryana was arrested by the Jadavpur police for allegedly raping a woman from Golf Green after promising to marry her. In another incident at Watgunge, close to Kidderpore, 20-year-old Farhan Ahmed was arrested on the same charges.
Police said that in the Golf Green incident, the woman, who is trying her hand in modelling, had met the accused on social media and some common friends and they started a relationship.
Later on, he proposed marriage and established a physical relationship with the woman. He also allegedly borrowed money from her, which he never returned.
A few days ago, the woman alleged that the accused had refused to marry her. On Friday night, she reported the matter to Jadavpur police, who laid a trap and arrested the accused near his residence. The cops said they will get the woman to record her statement before a magistrate soon.
“Besides the IPC section pertaining to
rape, we have added a section pertaining to his refusal to pay back the money,” said an officer.
In the second case, accused Ahmed had been in a physical relationship with the complainant since August. The woman claimed that every time she tried to raise the issue of their marriage, the accused would ignore it.
