HOWRAH: A housewife died on Sunday afternoon in a blaze at her Howrah residence sparked by an LPG cylinder explosion.
The incident took place at Ramdhenu Ghosh Lane in Belur. Sumana Mondal (23) was in the kitchen of her father's house preparing lunch when the cylinder exploded. The kitchen caught fire, which soon spread to other parts of the house.
Local residents immediately informed the Belur fire station located at a stone's throw.

They alleged that there was no response from the fire station. They then made a frantic call to the fire station at Howrah Maidan, which is almost 8 km away.
Some neighbours rushed to a nearby factory and got fire extinguishers from there. The fire was doused within an hour. Fire tenders from Howrah Maidan reached only after the fire had been put out.
Sumana had charred to death by then. Lakshmi Das, a neighbour, who was with Sumana in the kitchen, escaped unhurt though.
Sumana's three year old son and her father Amulya Chakraborty also survived unharmed. Sumana was on a visit to her father's house to attend a gathering for Guru Purnima.
