KOLKATA: In a fast-changing locality, where old houses are giving way to pricey apartments because of their proximity to South City, a realtor was abducted in broad daylight, just 200 yards from Jada-vpur police station on Tuesday morning.
He is no ordinary developer. Fifty-two-year-old Anup Roy is also a CPM branch secretary. Kolkata has rarely seen such a kidnapping.
Four men, who were “well aware of Anup’s political credentials” and his daily routine, waited for him in a Tata Sumo for 30 minutes on the busy Prince Golam Hossain Shah Road near the police station.

Like all other days, Anup set out for his morning walk at 6.15am, with a big shopping bag in hand. Around 7.35am, he was returning home with the morning’s purchase, chatting with neighbour Manindra Dhar. They parted ways at a crossing. Seconds later, Manindra heard screams from the other side. He ran ar-ound and just saw the Sumo speed away.
Grocer Ujjal Nandi, who was opening his shop at that time, said: “I could see his feet kicking about. Three men pushed him inside the car while a fourth, sitting inside, dragged him in by his hands,” said Nandi. The grocer chased the Sumo for about 200 yards after which it picked up speed. The criminals were so brazen that they kept calling Anup’s wife and friends, knowing that police would track their location through the cellphone towers.
