Kolkata: City police commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal was one of the 26 Kolkata Police and Bengal Police officers who were conferred awards on the occasion of Independence Day this year.
While five officers and policemen received the police medal for gallantry, one was conferred the President’s police medal for distinguished service. Twenty cops received police medal for meritorious service.
Goyal received the first bar to the Police Medal for Gallantry. He had received the PMG earlier in recognition for excelling in policing.
IG (north Bengal) Rajesh Kumar Yadav was another awardee of this medal. Others who received the PMG were SI Baidurjya Ghosh, ASI Avijit Ghosh and constable Amit Chatterjee.
The lone President’s police medal for distinguished service was awarded to inspector Soumya Banerjee, the current OC of New Market police station. Among the 20 who got medals for meritorious serv-ice were additional CP-II of Kolkata Police Subhankar Sinha Sarkar, joint CP KP Ashesh Biswas, KP ACP Supriyo Bhattacharyya, and Kolkata Police detective department’s Joyjit Bhattacharya.
A total of 954 police personnel have been awarded police medals on Independence Day, 2023. President’s police medal for gallantry was awarded to a CRPF jawan, police medal for gallantry was awarded to 229, President’s police medal for distinguished service was awa-rded to 82 and police medal for meritorious service was awarded to 642 personnel.
The President’s police medal for gallantry and police medal for gallantry are awarded for gallantry in saving life and property, or in preventing crime or arresting criminals. The President’s police medal for distinguished service is awarded for a distinguished service record and the police medal for meritorious service is awarded for service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.
