MALDA: A seven-year-old girl, working as a baby-sitter , was allegedly abused, beaten up and scalded with candles by her employers before neighbours rescued her. The employer couple was arrested after her mother lodged a complaint with police on Tuesday. The girl is in hospital.
BSNL contractor Sudip Chakraborty and his wife Aparajita, residents of Malda's Church Pally, employed the child in October to look after their toddler.
Sumitra, the girl's mother who works in a local nursing home, alleged that the torture began right after that. "A few days ago, she broke a mirror by mistake. For that, she was severely thrashed. The couple also scalded her with melting candles," she said.
Lying on her hospital bed, the bruised girl said, "Several times, I pleaded with my mother to take me home. I could not bear the torture."
Malda SP Satyajit Bandyopadhyay said, "We have arrested Sudip and his wife on charges of molestation and abuse under the Child Labour Act."
