KOLKATA: A young couple was found dead in their rented flat at Kalikapur under Survey Park police station on Thursday afternoon. The two, Shyamal Roy (32) and

Shefali Khatoon

(30), had been in love with each other and got married a few years ago. Roy was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a dupatta while his wife was lying dead on the bed in the same room.

The twin deaths were reported around 12.30 pm by locals. “We found a pillow thrust on the face of Shefali. We are not ruling out the fact that the pillow was placed on her face in a bid to asphyxiate her. Though it can be a voluntary decision on her part, there is also a greater possibility that she was murdered by her husband before he hanged himself. The fact that she carried other injuries makes the second theory more credible. However, we are still not ruling out the possibility that an outsider might have been involved. We are waiting for the post-mortem report before we arrive at any conclusion,” said a senior police investigator.

DC (East) Gaurav Lal said that certain differences had cropped up between the couple. “Roy had come to the police station a couple of months ago to complain against his wife’s behaviour to him. However, we have not found any suicide note,” said Lal. While Roy was a member of the local syndicate, he had no steady job and took up odd jobs for earning money. The couple did not have any child, said cops.

The owner of the house, where the two stayed, said the couple had gone to attend the bhoomi puja of their new house on Tuesday and they looked happy when they returned home. “In the morning when they did not come out, I peeped through the window and saw the woman lying unconscious,” he said. Sources said the couple had left their Lake East Road residence two months ago and shifted to the present Kalikapur Sardarpara address.
