KOLKATA: More than 24 hours after a woman was molested at Patipukur near Lake Town on Sunday, police are yet to arrest the prime accused. They claimed he was absconding. The shocking incident is not a one-off case on the stretch where the girl was molested on Sunday evening. A teenager from the locality was teased and molested by a group of men at the same spot on SK Deb Road a few weeks ago.
But she was too shaken and traumatized to report the matter to police.
“She was subjected to the same trauma by some hoodlums there. But the girl was too shocked and her family decided to keep the incident under wraps. It could be the same gang. Goons roam around the stretch in search of easy prey,” said Suparna Dey, a local resident. Anup Mitra , counsellor of ward 31 and MMiC of South Dum Dum Municipality, visited Patricia Thongjam on Monday. The ward committee also submitted a memorandum to the officer-in-charge of Lake Town police station, urging him to crack down on the goons and prevent such incidents from taking place there. The accused, in his late 20s, had suddenly grabbed Patricia. As the others had cheered him on, he groped Patricia. Her screams for help were drowned in jeers and catcalls. When Gautam Dutta, a local resident and an IBM employee, came to the rescue of Patricia, he was beaten up and slashed with a razor.“It was a shameful incident. And, since the victim is new to the place, I wanted to assure her of all help. We have found out where the absconding prime accused stays and have also demanded his immediate arrest. If police fail to nab him, we will track him down. We are going to the accused’s family and appeal them to ask him to surrender,” said Mitra. One of the accused, Somnath, who was arrested immediately after the incident, was produced in the Bidhannagar ACJM court on Monday.
