’s body inside a freezer for three years, investigators have begun questioning him on his alleged role in forging her signature to claim pension.

Chandra Majumdar (89), who — the bank claimed — was with him on at least two occasions, was questioned last Sunday at New Alipore police station.

“We have questioned

and his father, but their answers have not satisfied us. Every time he claimed that he needed money to sponsor his mother’s treatment, but refused to clarify the modus operandi. Also, he has not accepted the charges,” an officer said. Sources said both Gopal and Subhabrata could be questioned at their home yet again. “We may ask a bank official to be present, if required,” he added. Subhabrata’s family and lawyers, though, said he was cooperating in the investigations.

Police sources said their interrogation will not be restricted to the alleged bank fraud that TOI broke. They will probe how Subhabrata managed to procure costly items like the industrial refrigerators used to freeze Bina’s body. “A thorough search of the house is also required to establish if the family has an operational bank locker. We are trying to retrace the entire operation,” the officer said. Lalbazar sources said they are keeping an eye on the Behala police’s progress, too, where Subhabrata is facing a second FIR. It is unlikely for Behala police to submit a chargesheet till things become clearer in the New Alipore case.

had moved court after producing pictures of how bed bugs were bothering Subhabrata at Pavlov. “He needs to be treated at home. He has been wishing to return home ever since he was bitten by the bugs,” Chakraborty said. The court has asked Chakraborty to furnish a written statement saying she will be responsible if Subhabrata gets involved in any untoward incident and that the 46-year-old will not leave the country at any cost.
