Burdwan: A sand-laden truck, allegedly chased by the police for money, ran over a 19-year-old girl at Rosulpur Bazar in Memari on Thursday, starting a riot-like situation in which villagers attacked cops with stones, bricks and bottles, injuring 10-12 of them.
Madhu Mallick, a second-year BA student at Memari College, was cycling to the institute when the truck hit her on G T Road near Rosulpur Bazar.
Angry residents, who alleged that the truck driver was fleeing from policemen who demanded tollah, prevented the Memari police to take away the body.
Besides blocking G T Road with electric poles and tree trunks, they hurled stones and bricks at the cops, injuring them.
To rein in the protesters, a large force, led by RAF, arrived at the spot. Burdwan SP Gourav Sharma said 12 policemen were injured and admitted to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. Eight villagers have been detained by the Memari police for the attack.
