Cop foils suicide on 2nd bridge

Kolkata: Cops on Wednesday afternoon foiled a suicide attempt — for the second time in as many weeks and the sixth time this year — by stopping a man from jumping into the Hooghly from Vidyasagar Setu.
“Sergeant Aritra Mukherjee was on duty near Vidyasagar Setu toll plaza when he was informed by a motorist that a man had moved dangerously close to the railings of the bridge and was possibly trying to end his life by jumping into the river. Mukherjee rushed to the spot and started a conversation with the man to keep him engaged,” said an officer.
All the while, the sergeant kept inching closer to the man — a 26-year-old Beltala resident — until he was close enough to get a hold of him. After several minutes, Mukherjee managed to convince him to not take any drastic step. He then brought the man to safety and handed him over to duty officer Kartik Chandra Murmu of Hastings police station.
