Congress worker tied to tree, beaten to death in West Bengal; 5 arrested

JALPAIGURI: A Congress worker was beaten to death by a mob at Hothath Colony in Khagrabari I gram panchayat in Maynaguri.

Manik Roy, 48, was tied to a tree and beaten ruthlessly on Wednesday.

Later, he was taken to Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital, where he died on Thursday morning. Five people have been arrested.

Roy’s wife lodged a police complaint against 12 people, including local TMC neta Dilip Roy. A Jalpaiguri court sent the five to judicial custody for two weeks.

Sources said Manik had a long-standing dispute with some of his neighbours after lodging a complaint against illegal sand mining nine years ago.

His neighbours lodged a molestation case against him and Roy spent time behind bars. His house was set ablaze, and he had to flee. Roy went to Siliguri, where worked as a security guard for a private firm. He returned to his village on Sunday after nine years.

Trinamool’s former Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh said, “This is a completely undesirable and unwarranted incident. We have sought a report on whether this has any political links. Until then, we cannot comment. Cops have acted, and the truth will come out.”
