KOLKATA: The
Congress on Monday announced their candidates to three assembly seats for the bypolls scheduled on February 23, making it a four-cornered contest with
Trinamool Congress, Left Front and
BJP having fielded their candidates earlier.
While Murshidabad's Rezinagar and Malda's English Bazaar were vacated by defections, Birbhum's Nalhati fell vacant after its MLA Abhijeet Mukherjee resigned on being elected as a Lok Sabha MP from Jangipur.
State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya said, "Rabiul Islam will contest in Rezinagar, Narendranath Tiwari in English Bazaar and Abdur Rehman in Nalhati, according to the AICC information received. All candidates are relatively fresh faces."
Trinamool expectedly has fielded state minister Humayun Kabir and Krishnendu Narayan Chowdhury in Rezinagar and English Bazaar respectively. But they have opted for a relatively inexperienced Biplab Ozha in Nalhati.
Forward Bloc's Dipak Chatterjee will fight from the Nalhati seat, Kaushik Mishra of CPM will contest from English Bazaar, while Sirajul Islam Mondal of the RSP from Rejinagar. The BJP has fielded Anil Singh in Nalhati, Arabinda Biswas at Rejinagar and Sanjib Mishra at English Bazaar.
