ASANSOL: A day before the crucial by election in three wards of the Asansol Muncipal Corporation (AMC), Congress has received a big jolt as deputy mayor Amarnath Chatterjee joined Trinamool Congress on Thursday.
Sources said, since the last few days Chatterjee has been keeping in touch with Trinamool heavyweights Mukul Roy and Moloy Ghatak. In the past few days, a number of Congress councillors have joined Trinamul Congress.

They include Dayamoy Roy, Sadhan Ghosh, Rupa Bauri and Rita Biswas. Three more Congress councillors — Rabiul Islam, Somenath Chatterjee and Prasad Barman — are expected to join Trinamool by Thursday night, sources added.
Not only the Congress councillors, Forward Bloc councillor Arun Mondal, who is reportedly close to coal mafia Joydeb Mondal, has joined Trinamool Congress. Likewise, Trinamool gained a majority in Pujali municipality in South 24 Parganas and Uluberia Municipality in Howrah.
In May 2009, just after the Lok Sabha polls, Congress and Trinamool had formed the board in Asansol Municipal Corporation.
