When he was posted as SDPO (Diamond Harbour), Bhowmik had complained of being robbed of his belongings at a hotel where he had put up.
He introduced himself as Bose''s PA and sought police help. He was then put up in a house in the area. During his stay there, he impressed his host with his connections in high places and promised to get his daughter admitted to Jadavpur University. For this, he took Rs 85,000 from his host.
Bhowmik promised jobs to homeguards at Namkhana-Kakdwip and collected Rs 40,000 from them. He had even tried his luck with thespian Shobha Sen, said Mitra. He told Sen that he could arrange for shows sponsored by the government. He also told her to send those who could not afford treatment to him.
According to Mitra, driver of the car used by Bhowmik was arrested. The car, with a metallic national emblem on its fender, and fitted with a red light like VIP vehicles, had been registered in Maharashtra.
